Metallica - St. Anger.


Maybe metallica noticed this is the right moment in history to create a unique rock band that can influence the next generation. The moment where people are getting tired (again) of pop (through MTV's manipulation system(R)?). Or maybe they got tired of selling themselves as something they were not. What's true is that this album is heavy, and has no ballads, it has a lot of Pantera, Fear Factory and even Anthrax in it. You could ask "so, are they back?" Well, no. The thrash metal metallica, with E-tuned guitars will never be back. According to MTV Icon (you probably have already seen it) Metallica influenced Nu-metal bands (Korn, Limp Biskit, Linking Park..), and now Metallica was reinfluenced by them. Well, Nu-metal sucks crap horribly, but it has something: the power in live gigs. Those bands sound really powerful, call it attitude, or call it compressor effect (or production). And they're SELLING BIG. Maybe that's really Metallica's NEW INFLUENCE... That's what they try to show in the bits of rehearsals put together in the DVD bonus, that they sure are powerful. But never as powerful as 90's Pantera. Anyway, Metallica never were that powerful.



Metallica went from fast heavy metal to thrash metal (1984) to heavy rock (1994?) to nu-metal (2003). They can call it "evolution", "there's no sense in playing the same over and over again, you gotta change to stay current". Their music wasnt selling as much as nu-metal. At least in the airhead/skater commercial target. You just cant stop perceiving some sellout ambient in this album.


If you still dont believe this is nu-metal:

1. The guitars are C-Tuned. 2 Tones below normal tunning.
2. Everything's so compressed.
3. There's not even a single solo in the entire album.
4. All the songs end up sounding the same. All of them are 6th string driven.
5. The guitar sound is intentionally dirty. There's even some feedback, once in a while, from the snare drum.
6. A lot of crash cymbals through the whole CD.

Really, the voice sounds crappy here, outta place, country voice over metal, the cowboys from hell. Besides, Hetfield can't scream! Call Jonathan Davis or Fred Durst. And seriously, some hip-hop over the music could break the monotony in some parts.


What sells this album:


- The attempts at "Frantic"
- "St. Anger"
- "Invisible Kid" (from 4:56)
- "Shoot me Again"
- "Sweet Amber"
- ...the intro and outro to "All within my hands". Out of 11 songs / 1:15:08 total playing time.
- Lars Ulrich drums (and drumwork :) )
- ... that's it I think.

Donde traigan a Daft Punk ahi si se arma el mierdero de la vida. La chupamelculo. Yo creo que mucho de esto depende de que tan bien salga el concierto de Electrolux2003 (ya mencionado por dersteppenblogger), en terminos de asistencia, comportamiento y sobre todo ganancias. No es que yo sea de los organizadores, pero 1. Rinocerose no podrá ser Ettienne de Crecy, o Cassius o Daft Punk, pero tambien es bueno, no tanto (en materia de albumes), pero es bueno y 2. No tengo nombre para describir lo que sentiria si trajeran a los anteriormente mencionados. (Como dice mi amigo Richard: "por Daft Punk pago... doscientos mil pesos... cagado de la risa")


Solo espero que esta vez Electrolux sea bueno, la vez pasada puedo certificar que fue un descache. El nombre Electrolux, viene de música electrónica + Teatro LUX (el del centro, Cll 19 con 8, que ahora es un parqueadero) (Esta vez sera en Corferias). Las inscripciones eran gratis via Internet y la boleta era enviada directamente a la casa (gracias a la Alianza y a la Embajada Francesa) (Esta vez toca ir a recoger la boleta). Los cupos eran mas limitados (esta vez son 10000, la vez pasada, si mal no recuerdo, eran 3000 y a los primeros 1000 les daban CD!). Traian DJs (notese el plural!) franceses. Parecia perfecto, porque eran DJs de afuera y por que el evento tenia cierta atmosfera de exclusividad, aun siendo en el LUX. Pero entré, y vi a los mismos DJs de los bares electronicos de Bogotá (como "Juangui", que a pesar de todo salvó la noche haciendo lo mismo que hace en Antífona, junto con otro DJ que no recuerdo, que mezcló entre otras "Prix Choc" de Ettienne de Crecy ("sensimilla... marihuana...") pero que no duro sino 20 min y eso, y al final cerraba "Sergeï", un DJ frances (bastante desconocido) que resulto ser un revuelto entre Trance y Jungle, bastante oscuro y pesado, nada para divertirse (al menos sanamente), y tal vez perfecto para un video como el de "Smack my Bitch up" de Prodigy. Además, lo peor de todo, es que toco pararse directamente sobre el piso del parqueadero, en el cual era imposible moverse.


Lo imperdonable de este Electrolux, es que está dominado por la rosca "electrónica" (muy "entre comillas") de los aterciopelados y su sello disquero "entrecasa". Nada peor que el guitarrista de aterciopelados dándoselas de electrónico (como lo hizo en el 1er encuentro de sonidos electronicos de Bogotá), o el house dulzón con algo de latin de "de lux club" (a veces suena a música como para discoteca de tandas (por no decir burdel) - y sus integrantes se ven demasiado gays). Ahora, tambien va a tocar el famoso "bicho" del que tanto he oido hablar, pero del cual no he escuchado sino el sample de la pagina de Electrolux (que no me gustó). De esos samples, lo único que me gusto, fue "College Girl" de DJ Camila. Sexy. Pero es la que abre el evento por allá a las 6 PM. Heheh, pobre. A probar sonido DJ Camila. 1-2-3-si-si-probando?


2. The HM gas station at Pacifica


I've received compliments from Azul concerning my addition to the online city of Pacifica (and some feedback about 2 transparent pixels in the not-transparency zone). Well, the program I used is called BlockCad 3, availaible for free and for Windows (sorry open software fanatics), that allows 3D modelling of lego stuff. The original capture looks like this:





I had to zoom out (reducing size or resolution looked anti-aliased), remove the stubs, the little things that make the pieces match (it totally messed the small image), and captured the image at the size of azul's template. With fireworks I optimized it, selected a transparency color (hence the 2 odd pixels) and exported as png.


I've been asked by azul to kindly re-suggest to all of you, in the evil open list, to add a house to Pacifica. It may look good. And azul may give you some prize for it. I got nothing :(.


And, for the cars and people.. uhm...let's see what azul proposes as a template. I have no way of doing people images withouth anti-aliasing. And I could only make them through Poser: Nude 3D bombshell girls for all the design geeks out there.

Electronica #3: A world of knobs


Ok, so far I've given some intro/motivation about what's electronic music, the requirements for creating it, and then I ranted about some very popular effects which are a key in getting a competent (and actual) sound out of an instrument. This update is about Wave Synthesis.


The word "synthesis" means: "artificial formation of a composite body through its elements' combination" -The result of a combination of elements. In the case of Sound Waves, it's all about adding and subtracting waves, in order to change the characteristics of a sound.


INTRO


Before starting to read, download THIS handy program, the TS404 software synthesizer, which you'll use to play while reading this document.



At the end of this guide you'll know what this means. :)



SUBTRACTIVE SYNTHESIS


So imagine you could generate a pulse constantly, with a certain tempo: tan, tan, tan,.. well you get the idea. :) So there you have some waves, but what if you could add some other waves over this pulses to modify them? Believe it or not, this was the original way to generate sounds that could resemble those of nature, like pianos, guitars, drums, birds, etc. If you owned a Casio or Yamaha keyboard when you were a kid, it USED this way to generate sounds, as opposed to this times, when memories are much more evolved and, instead of keeping information about how to generate some specific sound through synthesis, it keeps the samples of actual instruments.


But well, the subtractive synthesis' procedure is the next:


The pulse generator is called an OSCILLATOR. The pulses generated go through a series of FILTERs, which cut some specific frequencies, and finally this modified sounds go through an AMPLIFIER, that modifies the loudness of the sound over a period of time to emulate a natural instrument. The most general graphic is the next:


OSCILLATOR -> FILTER -> AMPLIFIER


So this is subtractive synthesis about. Cutting frequencies off a wave.


I. ABOUT OSCILLATORS


The oscillator generates pulses continuously from the moment you press a key on the keyboard and until you release the key. This "waveform" has a timbre characteristic (brightness) and a pitch. The timbre depends on the shape of the wave (sin, square, triangle, sawtooth, rectangle) and the pitch depends on how many times the wave repeats in a second, called "cycles per second", which is the same as "Hertz". The middle "A" note, A3, is 440 Hz. A4=880 Hz, and so on.


Timbre is richer when generated by a mixture of waves, that normally have as frequency a multiple of the "Fundamental Frequency" (F) (in the case of A3, F=440 Hz). When the A3 wave of a Violin is analysed, it involves waves with frequencies F, 2F, 3F, 4F, etc. This frequencies are called "Natural Harmonics".


Example: the drawing on the left shows the waveform of triangle, square, sawtooth and rectangle waves. The drawing on the right shows the harmonics spectrum, each dot in the X axis represents a natural harmonic (an F multiple).


II. ABOUT FILTERS


"A filter is used to remove frequencies from the waveform so as to alter the timbre."


There are Highpass Filter (HP), Bandpass Filter (BP), Lowpass Filter(LP), and Notch.


Highpass: cuts off the low frequencies letting the high frequencies pass.
Lowpass: cuts off the high frequencies letting the low frequencies pass.
Bandpass: cuts off both high and low frequencies letting mid-range frequencies pass.
Notch: cuts off the mid-range frequencies letting both high and low frequencies pass.


Example: in this image, the X axis is frequency, and Y axis is amplitude. The upper drawings show LP, Resonance (later) and HP. The middle drawings show the harmonics spectrum of the original wave (dotted line on the upper drawings), and the bottom drawings show the harmonics spectrum after applying the respective filter.


This filters are controlled by 2 parameters:


Cut-off: controls how much of the frequencies in the specified range pass. If the filter is all "open", all frequencies pass, while if the filter is all "closed" you'll hardly hear anything.


Resonance: for HP and LP, it controls which frequencies in the specified range are emphasized (boosted). When resonance is set high, the frequencies near the cut-off range are so pronounced that the wave will start ringing, it will sound like feedback, only tuned. For BP and Notch, it controls how narrow is the range of frequencies being passed (same as cut-off!)


Example: in this image, the X axis is frequency, and Y axis is amplitude. The upper drawing shows the graph of a cut-off at some specific frequency, so the lower ones will pass unaffected. The other drawing shows different values of Resonance at the cut-off frequencies for the upper drawing.



III. ABOUT AMPLIFIERS (AMP. ENVELOPE)


The amplifiers use an ENVELOPE, to control the final loudness of the sound, and the way it decays and dies. This envelope can be seen as another waveform added to the wave generated by OSCILLATOR + FILTER.


This envelope is controled by 4 parameters:


Attack: The attack is the initial peak of the wave (when it reaches its higher amplitude). This parameter envelopes the attack waveform, so when set to 0 no attack is suppressed. When set to a higher value, the attack is less and less sharp, until its attack is eliminated, thus producing a "pad" sound.


Decay: Immediately after the attack, the wave begins decaying. This parameter controls how fast the wave decays to a certain level (sustain level), so when set to 0, the wave decays immediately. When set to a higher value, the decay time lasts more and more.


Sustain: After the wave's decay time has ended, and the keyboard key is still pressed, sustain determines the level of the original sound that keeps sounding until the key is released. So this parameter controls the sustain level.


Release: After the key is finally released, the envelope should drop from its actual level to 0. This parameter controls how fast the 0 level is reached, so when set to 0 the wave drops to 0 immediately. When set to a higher value, the wave dies slower and slower. It could actually be set NOT to die, which is forever sustained.


Example:

1. 0 attack (full attack), no decay, full sustain and 0 release. (gate effect)
2. 0 attack, large decay, some sustain level, and large release time (slowly dies). (Piano)
3. Mellowed attack, short decay time, a lot of sustain level and some release time. (Strings)
4. More mellowed attack, some decay time, low sustain level, and short release time. (Brass)


IV. MORE ABOUT ENVELOPES (LFO finally explained)


For added "expression" of the synthetic sound created, LFO's can be used. LFO stand for Low-Frequency Oscillator, so what's done is generating YET ANOTHER wave with this new OSCILLATOR, only it will produce only low frequencies with the only purpose to modulate the original waveform (the OSC->FILTER->AMP waveform). For example, this LFO could be set to modify slightly the original pitch over time, in a Vibrato manner. Or to vary the cut-off. Or to vary phasing of the wave (explained in session #2 of this useless guide).


LFO's parameters are RATE ("LFO's frequency. Turn clockwise for a faster modulation rate") and AMOUNT (to what degree the original waveform is affected).


There's Modulation envelope and Filter Envelope too! So you can add YET ANOTHER waveform to the LFO (modulator) waveform and to the Filter waveform! Ridiculously complex!


V. SOFTWARE


If you liked Subtractive Synthesis, there's a lot of programs that allow you to play with it, the best for me is Propellerhead Software's Reason. But there's Fruityloops, Rebirth, Reaktor, and much more simple, the VAZ+ which I like a lot too.



Reason's Subtractor device. There you can see 2 parallel oscillators, 2 serial filters, the 2 LFOs, Mod, Filter & Amp Envelopes, among others. This capture shows a not so basic configuration for a simulated bass guitar.



VI. NEXT: Wavetables and Digital Samplers.


Well, there's PC sound cards with 128 voices (instruments) made of synthesis parameters, like Sound Blaster, SB pro and SB 16. But most of nowadays sound cards (the good ones) are called "wavetable" synthesis cards. What they do is, instead of programming synthesis parameters for each of the 128 voices, they store wave files with samples of the real recorded sound for each one of them. But in the end, those files store WAVES too. So you can apply all of this lesson's Filters, LFOs and Envelopes to it. This is called "Wavetable Synthesis". Hate this later.

1. New music! / Llego musiquilla! OR some trash:


Well, Richard (who doesnt have a blog) went to my house, and among other things discused.. there's new music! Cafe del Mar 7 (great compilations!), Francois K - Deep and Sexy-A Wave Music Compilation, and (woah) Supreme Beings of Leisure, among other things. (So steppen, why don't you come over, like in the good old times, bring me the piazzolla stuff, and you'll watch the "Tango Magic" VHS original video and mp3-rip (that's a verb) some bossa nova?)


I apologize for not having time for updates lately, my time gets consummed by flashing (not my tits of course, but creating "flash-driven content"), reading the manual for my new keyboard (I'll use it to explain things easier in the next update of electro-pop-shit's how-to), the work at IBS and the test of java IDEs for servlet and applet development (jbuilder + together, "visual age", "forte", WebObjects, JRun, Eclipse, NetBeans, .. "and all those who I may have forgotten - you know who you are!"), yu-gi-oh tournaments (this saturday I spent from 11 AM to almost 7 PM to end up 3rd in an 18 people competition), and of course, legal procedures to get some papers because of the new robbery of my father's car (once again, every 3 years now) and for this days' flash project.


2. Making "Software" in Colombia Sucks!


The above-mentioned legal procedures for the flash project, consist in 2 insurance policies. Dont ask. The thing is, I spent a whole day asking insurance companies about how could I provide those policies as a contractor. Well the sad thing is, NO INSURANCE COMPANY IN COLOMBIA WILL INSURE A SOFTWARE PROJECT! (there you go alejo, for your computing blah!) I wasnt informed of the actual stats, but I was rejected as "There has been too much trouble with software contracts, is a policy of this establishment not to insure software projects, if I could show you, you'll notice the system doesnt allow me to add software contracts!".. and so on. Well, I admit I'd like some gossip in this matter, What has colombian software contractors done in the past to make insurance companies so afraid to support them?? I wanna know see numbers! I wanna know in what I'm involved as a computer-systems engineer! Of course, I was kinda in a dead-end cause I already perfectioned (signed) the contract, but fortunatedly I found just one company who dared to walk in the fire (not without a bailer) so finally I could start working. My father told me the situation is the same in Equator. Is it worlwide? Does anybody trust a computer scientist? I guess the search for a step-by-step procedure to develop software securely is an utopic must! Sad but true.


Other observations:


- Fuck MS for having/creating an erroneous concept of what software is. Fuck MS for creating a culture of negligence around all things windows. You created a system based on icons, or what else are the "blue screen of death", "restart and/or reinstall", "ctrl-alt-del" (for anything and everything), "viruses", etc, but icons of mankind's negligence? Seems like MS created the "driver culture". Everyone's always looking for some driver to stop the usual IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_THAN's...


- Fuck Linux and Linux community for creating YET ANOTHER! clon of Unix instead of fighting Windows 9x/ME/XP Home and MAC by creating a free robust and stable system for home users, who are not interested in knowing shit about users, groups, security, tar.gz's, kernel compilations for everything, reading the 1001 FAQs for installing some sound card, programming in bash, multiple distributors of the same thing that doesnt deliver the same, makefile-ing every day, mounting and unmounting anything, and a thousand more complexities you may come with, I know you'll do.


- Fuck Mac for being so expensive yet so invisible in the web. And so incompatible.


- Fuck C/C++ for being such a pain in the ass to program. C is like the programming language implementation of Murphy's law. If it may produce a segmentation fault, it will.


- Fuck Visual Basic for bringing unsuspecting CPUs to their knees for nothing, and for tearing memory apart. MS blames the programmers for it. For using the controls they provide!


- Fuck Java for bringing unsuspecting CPUs to their knees just for showing an ugly swing window.


- Fuck Oracle for being a pain in the ass for installing, managing, developing, testing, deploying and maintaining in linux. And SQLServer for being the godfather of DB inefficiency (as anything MS).


- Fuck Linux again for looking so bad. Linux is the anti-neat, the system with the ugly fonts, the mixer of interface fragments (retazos de interfaz), the clumsy copy-paste. Linux is the reflex of the standard programmer's mind, who only thinks in the solving of a problem and forgets about the user who will have to solve the problem for using it!


- Fuck Windows for being the commercial whore of computers. Windows is like Britney Spears & Backstreet Boys, like Metallica, like Cabas, like Hollywood's effects-based movies, like Merengue/Salsa & Vallenato... Poop without talent, polished and made up to sell, just by following a pre-established script for what's commercial. Windows was trash that looked good. And they're still trying to make it work. But it wont. Just like .NET, which isnt even finished!


- Fuck java based applications for being so bloat-ware. Application servers, IDEs, ERPs, EISs, ... All those keep us working til 10 PM and more.


- Fuck programmers for being so ad-hoc and so human. For getting tired, for being overwhelmed by every new technology or API that comes day after day, ...


- Fuck the internet for making us lose so much time of our lives, and for slowly making us lonely.


Software industry is doomed. I wouldnt insure anything dependant on the above mentioned items. And we programmers are the meat in the sandwich.
